Green IT? Small steps that make a big difference.... Back  | Print

Impact

Climate change and controlling Carbon emissions is an issue of global importance and yet few small businesses realise that they can make a real difference at little or no cost.  If the moral argument is not compelling then the realisation that, as a small business, taking these steps can reduce your costs should.  An investment in expensive new technologies is not a requirement and yet government figures illustrate that by simply turning off your PC at night and over weekends you can save on average £63.00 from your energy bill.

The first step...

Monitor how much energy you are using.  By recording usage you can measure the impact of your energy-saving actions.  Engage all employees in applying energy saving measures and encourage them to consider how other savings can be made, turning down the office thermostat by a single degree, your firm could save around 10% of its energy.  Computers and monitors account for half the electricity wasted in an office every day and by optimising the power consumption of your PC you are reducing emissions and costs.  Further details and a free solution is available from www.localcooling.com.   By turning off peripherals, such as printers and scanners, when not in use will extend their life expectancy as well as saving energy levels too.

Replace and recycle

When replacing an old PC give consideration to those powered by energy efficient power units as produced by TidalWave UK, and ensure that your old monitor is recycled (see below for local recycle points), there are also a host of Charitable organisations who can make use of old hardware including Oxfam, Friends of the Earth and Computer Aid.  Many Charitable organisations would be more than happy to recycle your used print cartridges and toners on your behalf, so consider this as part of a company wide recycling policy.

The next step..

Formulate a Green IT Office policy and start to see the benefits for your small business.  If you have any queries concerning energy efficient PC’s or how you can develop a green IT policy then please contact Team TidalWave for further advice.
