Vista. Does the “WOW” start NOW? Back  | Print

Confusion

A huge fanfare has accompanied the recent release of Microsoft Vista, with a chorus of conflicting articles appearing from those deeply entrenched in either their pro or anti Microsoft camps.  The media has been swamped with the same old arguments with little regard being given for the relative merits of the product itself and the effect it could have on small businesses thinking about the consequences of upgrading.

Cost

Software upgrades could cost typically between £100 and £200, although consideration should be given to those running older machines because the additional outlay required to bring machines up to specification could make the process cost prohibitive too.  Time costs in relation to installation and training should also be given serious consideration.

Characteristics

Vista has certainly brought a more contemporary user interface to the workplace and there are certainly benefits for file management, document searching and security that apply to both business and home users.  You can dip your toes into the waters of the Vista experience by freely updating to the newest versions of Internet Explorer and Media Player and enjoy these benefits without changing to Vista immediately.   What Vista does promise are enhanced user interfaces, diagnostics and help functions but is this really such a radical departure and can it delivery greater business productivity?  The jury is still out.

Conclusion

As with many version 1 software releases there is likely to be teething troubles and uncertainty.  We would strongly recommend a policy of evolution rather than revolution. Small businesses changing to Vista should do so when a new hardware requirement drives the decision making process.  Vista will surely be the natural environment for running business applications in the years to come but ensure that the transition is a natural one.  If you have any queries relating to Vista or indeed the newly released Office 2007 suite please feel free to contact the TidalWave Team.
